90 people in the Dyfi Biosphere responded to the survey about what support people need to have more conversations about climate change. The results demonstrate a desire for more information on practical solutions; better understanding of how we put these solutions into practice, and “better understanding of how to talk to people who have a different opinion on climate issues from you”. The majority of respondents had already had some helpful conversations about the climate, and emphasised what they found valuable about having these conversations were hearing others’ perspectives, learning, and feeling that other people are also concerned.
The people respondents most wanted to talk with about climate change were “individuals in your wider community” (44).
The most popular answers to the question “What kind of support might you find helpful, now or in the future?” were:
“Notifications when resources are added to the Machynlleth Climate Action website” (50 Yes)
“Receiving the Machynlleth Climate Action e-newsletter" (49 Yes)
“Face-to-face discussions with other who also want to learn more” (29 Yes, 21 Maybe)
Therefore, Freya is bringing the Machynlleth Climate Action website to life, creating this newsletter, and organising a climate conversations event (7.30pm Thursday 27th July, Owain Glyndwr Institute lawn).

Ecodyfi has 3 ebikes for the community to borrow, thanks for funding from the National Lottery Climate Boost. Two of the ebikes are converted from ordinary bikes (thanks to Cycle Dyfi), and one is a new Emu Evo ebike from Bike to the Future in Newtown.
The idea is for people to borrow an ebike for a few days or up to a week, to try out using one in their everyday life. Hopefully this can help reduce car journeys and improve people’s mobility, increasing wellbeing and lowering emissions.
If you would like to borrow an ebike, you’ll receive an info pack and have an in-person induction with the bike, and also be able to borrow a helmet and hi-vis vest. All the bikes have had pannier racks installed.
Here is the booking calendar for the ebikes: https://teamup.com/ksxqh996cvhq1qe8x2
Select which days you would like to reserve an ebike for, and then contact freya@ecodyfi.cymru to arrange an induction in Machynlleth town centre.
Ecodyfi has purchased two Flir ONE thermal imaging cameras that will enable us to see where heat escapes from buildings. This is funded by the National Lottery Climate Boost fund for the purpose of promoting energy efficiency in homes. It is part of our aim to benefit the local community through addressing climate change. We hope that you will enjoy using them, and that they are helpful in identifying where heat may be escaping from your home.
There is no charge for borrowing the camera – we hope that instead of money what you might offer in return is an energy-efficiency-enhancing action and/or help us promote this community-wide!
People who have borrowed the camera so far have found cold spots on their loft hatches and around door frames and window frames, gaps of insulation in their loft, and have used it to find hot water pipes under their floorboards, and see what devices are emitting heat while on standby. One family also noticed how warm the middle of their outdoor compost bin is compared to the surroundings – some soil-making action going on in there!
“Just wanted to say thank you for loaning me the infrared camera. It was enlightening to find out our triple glazed windows actually lose more heat via their frames than the glazing. I didn’t expect that. Thanks for offering such a great scheme & with a great service too.
Many thanks”
- Dan
